I am planning a spiritual trip to India this summer, as a first time visitor in India. I have plans for the first 3 weeks and the last 3 weeks of the summer, but between these two periods, I also have two weeks to go anywhere I want in India. I am going to travel alone these two weeks. I hope with your help to plan a safe, spiritual and life-changing trip this summer.

I would greatly appreciate your suggestions for both trip preparations and trip planning. Please share your stories and dreams about India with me.

If you have two weeks to travel in India, where would you visit and why?

I will try my best to blog about the trip whenever possible both before, during and after the trip.

I would go to Puducherry in the south. There is a ashram there called Auroville and some beautiful beaches and beautiful people.

Hello Jeff, thanks for the suggestion. I have googled Auroville.

From Auroville.org:
“Auroville wants to be a universal town where men and women of all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony above all creeds, all politics and all nationalities. The purpose of Auroville is to realise human unity.”

Auroville Charter

1. Auroville belongs to nobody in particular.
Auroville belongs to humanity as a whole.
But to live in Auroville, one must be the willing servitor of the Divine Consciousness.
2. Auroville will be the place of an unending education,
of constant progress, and a youth that never ages.
3. Auroville wants to be the bridge between the past and the future. Taking advantage of all discoveries from without and from within, Auroville will boldly spring towards future realisations.
4. Auroville will be a site of material and spiritual researches for a living embodiment of an actual Human Unity.

And from Wikipedia:
“Auroville (City of Dawn) is an experimental township in Viluppuram district in the state of Tamil Nadu, India near Puducherry in South India, whose stated purpose is to realize human unity in diversity. It is a popular tourist destination, and has been described as a “New Age metropolis conceived as an alternative exercise in ecological and spiritual living.”[1] The township starkly stands out from the surrounding traditional Indian villages and farms.”

I think it sounds really interesting. Have you personal experiences with the Auroville community?

i agree with jeff, pondicherry is a great place to visit. it was a french colony so it has a great blend of indo-french vibe to it. apart from the ashrams it also has a lot of artists and has a nice bohemian feel to it.

With permission to quote Jeff’s email to me:

Pondicheryy is a beautiful place with a lot of history. They were a French colony and that influence can be seen in the architecture and the restaurants (of course). Places I have been and can recommend are below:

* Santhome - a church dedicated to Saint Thomas (Doubting Thomas)
* Mamallapuram - an ancient beach-side temple near Chennai
* Chidambaram - a huge temple south of Pondi
* Mangrove forest - in Pichavaram, near Chidambaram. You can take a boat into the forest.

Santhome is in Chennai, by the way. The temple in Chidambaram is a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva and the dance of bliss, the Nataraja. Here is a good link on it: http://www.templenet.com/Tamilnadu/chidchid.html. Pretty old I understand.
