How many things are there which I do not want. — Socrates

I switched bedroom last weekend. Taking out all the old stuff that was hidden under the bed, clothes from the closets, old electronic equipments and other gadgets from drawers, gave me the opportunity to reflect on the values of stuff and on my past.

For each item I had to decide its value, whether I love the item enough to keep it, do I need it in the future and have to store it, or can I get rid of it. And each item that I could put in either the “give-away” bag or the garbage bag, gave me a big relief.

During the process and at the end of the day, decluttering, cleaning and organizing stuff into simpler systems gave me so much peace and enjoyment, that I can recommend everybody to make a conscious choice to get rid of a lot of old stuff.

Looking at the clothes that I only used few times, the electronic gadgets that were “cool” and “must-have” at the time I bought them, I remember my desires to acquire the stuff, and how unnecessary a lot of the stuff really became after acquisition. The process of decluttering strengthened my conviction that I can be happy with less stuff.

There are so many ways to love yourself and show love to others. Enjoy moments of peace and happiness, which money can not buy. Unconsciously acquiring items to yourself and giving away items to others, encourage materialistic life, and drives people away from spiritual life. At least I will be more conscious the next time I want to buy something to myself and others, and ask whether the item will increase happiness, or not?
